Exam Content
The JOT examination evaluates Japanese language proficiency across four core skill sections. Every level — from JT5 (Introductory) to JT1 (Advanced Professional) — follows the same structured format, with difficulty calibrated to the proficiency tier.
Four Skill Sections
Each JOT examination consists of these four sections, administered sequentially in a single sitting on a secure computer-based testing platform.

Vocabulary
Tests your knowledge of Japanese words and their meanings, readings, and usage in context. Covers everyday vocabulary scaled to each proficiency level — from 500 words at JT5 to over 10,000 at JT1.
B
Grammar
Assesses your understanding of Japanese sentence structures, conjugation patterns, particles, and grammatical expressions. Ranges from basic present-tense forms at JT5 to complex causative-passive constructions at JT1.
C
Reading
Evaluates your ability to comprehend written Japanese texts — from short signs and labels at JT5 to complex editorial passages and business reports at JT1. Tests inference, main idea extraction, and detail comprehension.
D
Listening
Measures your ability to understand spoken Japanese through audio recordings. Scenarios include everyday conversations, workplace instructions, public announcements, and academic lectures at higher levels.

Sample Question Types
Familiarise yourself with the question formats used across all JOT levels.
Vocabulary — Word Meaning Selection
A Japanese word or phrase is presented, and you select the correct meaning from four options. At higher levels, words appear in sentence context requiring nuanced understanding of usage and connotation.
Grammar — Sentence Completion
An incomplete sentence is given with a blank space. You choose the grammatically correct particle, verb form, or expression from multiple options. Higher levels introduce compound structures, conditional forms, and honorific speech patterns.
Reading — Passage Comprehension
A Japanese text passage is presented followed by comprehension questions. At JT5, these are short signs or labels. At JT1, expect 800–1,200 character passages drawn from newspapers, business reports, or academic journals.
Listening — Audio Response
An audio clip plays through your headphones — a conversation, announcement, or instruction. You answer questions about what you heard. Speed and complexity increase with each level, from slow single-word phrases at JT5 to native-speed business dialogues at JT1.
