JT4 provides an entry-level certification for candidates in the early stages of their Japanese language journey. This level confirms your ability to handle basic interactions — greetings, simple questions, short written texts — and establishes a formal record of your foundational skills.
Why Certify at the Elementary Level
Many Sri Lankan candidates begin Japanese study through language institutes or employer-sponsored training programmes. JT4 gives these learners a formal milestone — a certified result they can present to training coordinators, prospective employers, or migration consultants to demonstrate progress. It also establishes a baseline that makes subsequent preparation for JT3 more structured and measurable.
For candidates who have completed 150–200 hours of Japanese instruction, JT4 is the natural first certification target. It validates what you’ve learned so far and identifies the specific areas — vocabulary breadth, grammar accuracy, listening speed — where focused study will move you to the next tier.
What to Expect
- Reading tasks using short sentences and simple paragraphs written primarily in hiragana and katakana with basic kanji
- Listening segments featuring slow, clearly enunciated dialogues covering self-introduction, shopping, directions, and daily routines
- Grammar focused on present and past tense, basic adjective usage, particles (wa, ga, wo, ni, de), and simple connectors
- Vocabulary assessment of approximately 1,500 words drawn from everyday life and common classroom contexts
The test is delivered entirely on computer at approved centres in Sri Lanka. Facial recognition proctoring is active throughout the session, and results are scored and delivered digitally. There is no penalty for attempting JT4 before moving to higher levels — each certification stands on its own, and many successful JT1 holders started their journey right here.
