JT5 is the foundational tier of the JOT certification framework — the entry point for anyone beginning their relationship with the Japanese language. This level validates your recognition of the two phonetic scripts, your grasp of essential vocabulary, and your ability to understand the simplest spoken Japanese.
Starting from Zero
Many Sri Lankan candidates arrive at JT5 with no prior formal Japanese education — perhaps a few weeks of self-study, a short introductory course at a language institute, or exposure through Japanese media and culture. JT5 meets you where you are. It doesn’t assume classroom hours or textbook progression. It asks a simple question: can you read hiragana and katakana, recognise a core set of everyday words, and follow a basic spoken phrase?
That simplicity is deliberate. JT5 exists to give beginners something concrete — a certified result that says “I have started, and I have proof.” For candidates enrolled in pre-departure language programmes, JT5 completion is often the first checkpoint their training provider requires.
Test Content
Reading
Individual hiragana and katakana character identification, simple word matching, and very short sentences (under 20 characters) using only phonetic scripts.
Listening
Slowly spoken single words and two- to three-word phrases covering greetings, numbers, colours, days of the week, and basic classroom instructions.
- Vocabulary scope of approximately 500–800 words drawn from the most common everyday terms
- Grammar limited to basic sentence-final particles, the copula (desu/da), and simple present-tense statements
- No kanji reading required — all text presented in hiragana, katakana, or romaji
You don’t need to be fluent to take the first test. You just need to have started. JT5 is the proof that you did.
JT5 is administered under the same standards as every other JOT level — computer-based delivery, facial recognition proctoring, and digitally issued results. The test environment is identical whether you’re sitting for JT5 or JT1, because the integrity of the certification matters at every tier.
